Marlin 39a serial number dates
When Marlin developed this serial number system, they used the current year, subtracted from 100 to determine year of manufacture. (i.e. 100 - 02 = 98 or 1998 or 100 - 03 = 97 or 1997) This was done because from 1969 to 1972, Marlin used the the last two digits of the year as the serial number prefix.Can't seem to find an explanation to match the serial number with a date of manufacture that fits my gun. Serial number on tang behind hammer is 73123111. Barrel says "The Marlin Firearms Co. North Haven. Conn. U.S.A. ORIGINAL GOLDEN-39A CAL.22 S.L. & L.R. The formula for later marlins (8 digit ser.#) is to subtract the first two numbers of the ser.# from 100 the result is the D.O.M.. In your case 00 minus 00 = 00 i.e 2000. Remington built Marlins use a different system where the ser,# has no correlation to the D.O.M.

So, this would probably be about a 1925 gun. Jwmtx: Model 39's made between 1921 and 1925 had no serial number prefix.The one I'm asking about in this thread is a Marlin Model 39A, 24-inch, ".22 CAL. S. L. & L.R.". The serial number under the lever is 242XX. It has a small "JM" in an oval stamped on the right side of the barrel. The stock is plain. The rust primarily extends from a couple inches past the forend to the muzzle.
